If you are travelling to Hawaii for 2 weeks or less, visiting Lanai can be tricky, as in other Hawaiian islands(Maui, Oahu, Kauai, The Big Island), there are numerous attractions which are liked more by the visitors. There are more beaches in other islands which are good for snorkelling, surfing and options for adventure activities.
What islands you already havereservations?
If you are staying at Maui, you can plan a one day visit using ferry service which costs $30. However, coming by air from other islands will need more research. The reason is that flights to Lanai are more frequent from Oahu. So, if you are staying on any other island, the flight will be connecting flights.
What is the budget for the Hawaiian trip?
Coming to Lanai may bring extra flight charges, if you are not on Maui where you can take the ferry. There is no public transport on Lanai and you will have to hire and expensive taxi or car rental which is around $150 per day. Additionally, you may want to book these in advance. Hotels are quite few and damn expensive. Even if you plan to camp, it will cost $80 per night at Hulopoe beach.
What do you expect from your Hawaii trip?
Are you willing to be closer to crowded places with lot of facilities around?
Lanai city on the island the only place where you will find restaurants, medical services, and grocery stores. It is located the centre of island. All the island area outside the city has no petrol/gas stations or any other kind of shop. You will not find even any street light. Neither of the beaches has any coastal guards, beach rental shops or food trucks. Even the limited number of beaches that are on Lanai, will be empty. Such environment is definitely suited for those who want to have a peaceful time without any disturbance.
What activities do you enjoy?
If classified in terms of percentage of time, lanai visitors spend more than 60 percent of time driving on the dirt roads. The drive is not smooth at all, as the dirt trails are bumpy and shaky. You need a four wheel drive or a truck to explore such trails. The landscape is definitely unique and quite different from what you see in Kauai, Maui and Oahu. However, out of the few beaches, snorkelling and swimming is only possible at Hulopoe Beach. Remaining beaches are only good for beachcombing. There is a cat sanctuary which can be a 2-3 hour visit. There are a few hiking trails, where Munro trail is the longest one. It can be only explore on foot or bike, but no vehicle is allowed. One of the main differences here is that you will find not much people around you doing above activities in Lanai.
Are you travelling with your spouse, family, friends?
Lanai is a perfect place to adventure if you are travelling with a group of friends. Considering the lack of facilities and children attractions, Lanai island may not be a very good option for families. Couples and newly wed couples will also love visiting Lanai as they can enjoy their honeymoon while not having many distractions as on other island.
