Activities at Hanalei Bay
Hanalei Bay is a hidden gem as not many first time Kauai tourist know about the attractions. You will have unique surf experience at the Bay. If you plan to learn surfing in Hanalei Bay, this is an excellent place as there are lot of surf schools around Hanalei beach park. The busiest part of the Hanalei beach starts next to the pier. Hanalei beach is sandy with no rocks, however, the shallowness of water does not stay for long.
If you are looking for kayaking opportunities in Kauai in summer, you will not be disappointed as Hanalei River is closer and there are lot of places for kayak rentals. Due to some new law, renting boards from beach are banned, you can only bring from the Hanalei town.
Snorkelling and scuba diving at Hanalei Bay Kauai is not an option as there are no coral reefs. However, you will love to stay longer at the clean and well maintained beach. Hanalei beach is family friendly and provides life guards and rest rooms.
Waioli Beach Park has life guards, bathrooms and showers,too. The parking at Waioli beach park is easier to find compared to other portions of the Bay.

You must be wondering if there is a relation of Puff the Magic Dragon of Hanalei and the song about Puff the magic Dragon. Actually, they are relatable. However, the Magic Dragon of Hanalei is associated with the view of Hanalei Bay.
If you stand at the middle of Hanalei Bay on the beach facing ocean and start watching from your left side, the seashore appears to be like the head of dragon. If you keep on following the boundary of landscape, while ocean is on your back, it will appear you are watching a huge dragon which is sleeping. The extreme left part of the landscape (180 degrees) appears to be the tail of Dragon of Hanalei.
Challenges for first time Hanalei Bay visitors
If you travel by car to Hanalei bay, you should arrive early otherwise the parking will be full around 8 30 to 9 AM. Next to the blue waters of the Bay, you will find restaurants and food trucks.
The rainy season at Hanalei bay is a bit tricky and can cause road blocks due to flooding, therefore, you must always check during your trip if you will not be blocked while traveling by car. The waters near the Pier are quite shallow, and its not allowed to swim.
At Hanalei bay sharks are definitely seen sometimes but the local guards are active enough to spot and announce it to the visitors. In such cases, the bay is closed. At the latest shark attacked at Hanalei Bay happened on 2019/02/04 at 1 :30 pm. It was a Tiger shark that attacked a surfer who was 320 yards away from the shore.
